Editorial Note

We have published this stub genus article as part of a wider reorganisation of Sorbus sensu lato articles. This work will enable a new revision of Sorbus sensu stricto to commence in 2023 and bring the nomenclature of this complex group of plants up to date in line with modern treatments.

TC, August 2023.

A genus of 1 (Plants of the World Online 2023) to 3 (Rushforth 2018) species distributed in western China. Differentiated from related genera by the combination of: leaves large, c. 12–23 × 5–12 cm, with craspedodromus venation, ± glabrous; flowers in a terminal corymbose panicles, opening before the leaves, 20 stamens; fruits large, 20–30 × 15–20 mm, calyx lobes persistent, densely lenticellate, 3–4 carpels each with 2 superposed ovules (Rushforth 2018; Bean 1981).

Wilsonaria is closely related to Pleiosorbus L.H.Zhou & C.Y.Wu but may be distinguished by fruit ripening in a single season (cf. 12 months in Pleiosorbus); 20 stamens (cf. (25–)32–50 in Pleiosorbus); venation craspedodromus (cf. camptodromus in Pleiosorbus) (Rushforth 2018).
