'Vachellia' from the website Trees and Shrubs Online (treesandshrubsonline.
This genus includes around 150 species that previously constituted Acacia subg. Acacia. The splitting of Acacia into five smaller genera is one of the most controversial taxonomic procedures ever effected, involving retypification of the genus. Acacia s.s. now comprises only the Australian wattles, while Vachellia (which included the original type of Acacia, A. nilotica L., syn. V. nilotica) includes all of the African acacias with capitate inflorescences and spinescent stipules, besides species from Asia and America (the other African acacias with spicate infloresences have been assigned to Senegalia).
