Editorial Note

The ’cranberries’ in Vaccinium sect. Oxycoccus (Hill) Koch were treated by Bean under the genus Oxycoccos, distinguished by ‘their long, slender, wiry, creeping stems, clothed with alternate leaves,’ and by the corolla, ‘the four parts of which are so deeply divided that they become practically separate petals.’ ‘The cranberries like a moist or semi-boggy, peaty soil, and can be increased by seed or by layers. They have little garden value, although a broad patch of either kind forming a dense mass of interlacing stems is interesting and unusual. The berries are used for making tarts and in confections of various kinds.’

Allied to Vaccinium oxycoccos, but with smaller, triangular-ovate leaves 18 to 316 in. long, glabrous flower-stalks and the fruits oblong or inversely pear-shaped. The total distribution of this species is not known for certain; it appears to be mainly confined to Siberia and N. Europe (including Scotland), but has been reported from a few localities in the mountains of Central Europe.
