Editorial Note

A south and east Asian genus described in 2019 with six species formerly included in the polyphyletic DesmodiumDesmodium itself appears to be confined to America (e.g. the herbacous D. canadense), except for three very doubtful species from Africa, New Caledonia and Australia (Ohashi et al. 2021).

The recent taxonomic reshuffling of the polyphyletic genus Desmodium s.l. (which has included as many as 300 species, depending on the treatment) is rather involved, and has resulted in the transferral of a number of species to new genera, though much of the complexity involves tropical species not cultivated in our area. Most of the hardy species formerly cultivated as Desmodium are now included in Sunhangia, a new genus described in  described in 2019. See also Desmodium.

We have published this stub genus article as part of a wider reorganisation of Fabaceae articles. This is part of a programme of work beginning in early 2025 to bring the nomenclature of articles in line with modern treatments. Historic Bean text will appear under its correct modern name, with appropriate synonymy, until we have funding to update the articles entirely.
