A genus of a single species, allied to Holboellia and Stauntonia, but with consistently trifoliolate leaves (in the other two genera the leaflets are normally more than three in each leaf). The flowers are unisexual, smaller than in Holboellia and Stauntonia. Carpels three, each developing into a many-seeded berry. See also Sargentodoxa.

The genus was named in memory of Adrien René Franchet, once attached to the Paris Museum of Natural History, and one of the most capable botanists who ever worked at the Chinese flora. He died 14th February 1900.
