A genus of a single species, allied to Stauntonia, but with consistently trifoliolate leaves (in Stauntonia the leaflets are normally more than three in each leaf). The flowers are unisexual, smaller than in Stauntonia. Carpels three, each developing into a many-seeded berry.

The genus was named in memory of Adrien René Franchet, once attached to the Paris Museum of Natural History, and one of the most capable botanists who ever worked at the Chinese flora. He died 14th February 1900. See also Sargentodoxa.
