Tree to 15 m tall, 50 cm diameter, the bark cracking into square plates with age. Shoots stout, to 4 mm diameter, with a dense whitish-yellow stellate tomentum when young that mainly falls by the second year, and showing conspicuous white lenticels. Leaves late deciduous but usually evergreen in cultivation, thickly leathery, lanceolate, to elliptic or obovate, to 21 cm long and 10 cm wide. Apex taper-pointed, aristate, base rounded or tapered. The margin is entire or with up to 7 aristate teeth on each side. They are densely covered in red hairs above when young, becoming glossy dark green above and glabrous except at the base and on the midrib, and with a dense yellow-brown tomentum beneath. Petiole tomentose, to 3 cm long. Fruits borne singly or up to 3 on a peduncle to 1.5 cm long, cupule saucer-shaped, c. 1.5 cm across and 5 mm tall with appressed, tomentose scales, acorns globose-ovoid with a pointed tip, about 1.5 cm tall, only the base included in the cup and ripening the second year. Taxonomic note Romero Rangel et al. (2002) designated Quercus apiophylla, Q. ochroesthes and Q. sagata as synonyms of Q. hintonii, but observation of the type specimens indicates that these represent other taxa.

Quercus hintonii was described in 1939 by English botanist Edmund Frederic Warburg (1908–1966) in his series Plantae Hintonianae, in which he documented many plants, often describing new species, collected by English plant collector George Boole Hinton (1882–1943), who lived most of his life in Mexico and from whom the epithet derives. Hinton collected several specimens of this species in the municipality of Temascaltepec, Mexico State, between 1932 and 1934. The name should not be confused with that of Q. hintoniorum. The Latin termination –iorum indicates that this species was named after more than one person, in this case the family of George Hinton.

Quercus hintonii is not common in gardens. There are two trees at Iturraran Botanical Garden, Spain, introduced from Mexico State in 2011 and 2012. There are three trees at Mereweather Arboretum, Victoria, Australia that are reportedly ‘doing quite well’ (Funk 2015). The two largest of these were 4 and 4.3 m tall in 2025 (B. Funk, pers. comm.). They derive from an Allen Coombes collection in Mexico State in 1997 (CMBS 424).

Originally regarded as Critically Endangered (Rodríguez Acosta, Coombes & Morales 2000) and later revised to Endangered (Good et al. 2024). The restricted distribution of this species is threatened by logging and agricultural expansion. It is cut locally for use as firewood and in construction.
