The similarities with Thuja – in which Platycladus orientalis used to be placed as T. orientalis – are clear to see, especially in the foliage, but the differences in cone morphology are striking. Arles, France, July 2022. Image Tom Christian.

Editorial Note

Bean treated the only species under its old name Thuja orientalis L., but it has long been considered distinct from the thujas and is now treated in its own monospecific genus as Platycladus orientalis. We have copied Bean’s text here in full under the correct modern name and will update the article when funds are available. If you would like to sponsor this genus please contact us.
