Pectinopitys ferruginea has been placed in the category Least Concern (IUCN), as it is relatively abundant in the wild in New Zealand. Image A. Farjon.

We have published this stub genus article in 2023 as part of a wider reorganisation of Podocarpaceae articles, to enable a new revision of Podocarpus to be published in 2023. The only species presently treated here is Pectinopitys ferruginea, based on Grimshaw & Bayton (2009).

Described in 2019 to accommodate six of the nine species formerly (and somewhat uncomfortably) placed in Prumnopitys: Pectinopitys exigua (de Laub.) C.N.Page (distributed in Bolivia); Pectinopitys ferruginea (G.Benn. ex D.Don) C.N.Page (New Zealand); P. ferruginoides (Compton) C.N.Page (New Caledonia); Pectinopitys harmsiana (Pilg.) C.N.Page (NW South America); Pectinopitys ladei (F.M.Bailey) C.N.Page (NE Queensland, Australia) and Pectinopitys standleyi (J.Buchholz & N.E.Gray) C.N.Page (Costa Rica) (Page 2019).
