A vigorous tree, with a long straight trunk in suitable conditions and slender crown. (Paulownia Professional 2022).

USDA Hardiness Zone 5

RHS Hardiness Rating H6

A product of a Chinese breeding programme for forestry use, Paulownia ‘Pao Tong Z07’ is a hybrid incorporating genes from P. fortunei, P. kawakamii and P. tomentosa (Paulownia Professional 2022); it is one of very few forestry hybrids to involve P. kawakamii. By 2022 it had become the most popular Paulownia clone in plantations in Japan, and was promoted in Europe by the Spanish-based company Paulownia Professional for its vigour, disease resistance, drought tolerance and quality timber; its narrow crown allows planting at the relatively close intervals of 4 × 4 m or 4 × 3 m (Paulownia Professional 2022).

It is also an exceptionally hardy tree and is claimed to be able to survive 33°C of frost; this has led to its being recommended for use in eastern Canada, both as a crop and as an ornament (Brugmansia Quebec 2022). It needs however to be emphasised that Paulownia flower-buds, which spend the winter half-developed within individual buds, are likely to be killed by cold weather long before the tree itself begins to suffer.
