Johnson, O. (2022), 'Paulownia ARCTIC®' from the website Trees and Shrubs Online (treesandshrubsonline.
An infertile hybrid with a long, straight stem when grown under forestry conditions; general appearance like Paulownia tomentosa; flowers white, with purple dotting and a yellow throat (Worldpaulownia.com 2022).
USDA Hardiness Zone 5
RHS Hardiness Rating H6
Part of World Paulownia’s SUPER SELECT® series of Paulownia hybrids, ARCTIC® is significant for its dual role, both as a forestry clone (Jakubowski 2022; Jensen 2016) and as ornamental which is now offered by several American nurseries (Bob Wells Nursery 2022; Nature Hills 2022). Selected for its hardiness (to –26° C), it is infertile (Bob Wells Nursery 2022) and is one of very few Paulownia to bear predominantly white flowers (with purple spotting and yellow throats) (Worldpaulownia.com 2022). Its parentage is unrecorded – or is a trade secret – although davesgarden.com discusses the SUPER SELECT® series (perhaps for convenience) under P. elongata.
