Some plants of M. coccinea now in gardens derive from cuttings which were taken from one found growing on a tree-stump in full sun near Lake Puyehue, Chile, early in 1963, and sent to Kew by air. In the Temperate House at Kew this clone has proved to be much more floriferous than the one previously used. It is also proving hardy out of doors, and survived the 1985 winter at Wakehurst Place, Sussex.
