Lyonothamnus is now a monospecific genus placed within subfamily Amygdaloideae of Rosaceae, endemic to the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California, where it was discovered by William Scrugham Lyon while collecting for Asa Gray in July 1884 (Strother 2014). Formerly, however, it was more widespread in continental North America and several fossil species have been recognised (Erwin & Schorn 2000). It is described under the entry for Lyonothamnus floribundus.
