Editorial Note

The text below has been heavily revised to reflect the most recent understanding of the taxonomy. Bean treated only one of the four species cultivated in our area, but a full treatment of the genus will be provided when funding is available. If you would like to sponsor the work please write to editor@treesandshrubsonline.org

A genus of four species (POWO 2025) from temperate S. America and New Zealand. Formerly placed in the Philesiaceae on account of the net-veined leaves and fleshy fruits, both of which resemble Philesia and Lapageria. However, Luzuriaga differs from both in the shape of its flowers, and it is in fact the twisted petioles that give a better clue to its true position – in the Alstroemeriaceae, where it is placed by APG III (2009). It had formerly been included with Drymophila in Luzuriagaceae by APG I (1998) and APG II (2003).
