All of the species treated by Bean under the name Lithospermum have since been referred to other genera – either Lithodora and Glandora, though species included in the current concept of Lithospermum are cultivated in our study area. A genus of mainly herbaceous annuals and perennials, containing a handful of subshrubs (the herbaceous species may have a perennating woody caudex, and/or a violet-pigmented woody rootstock). Leaves alternate. Flowers yellow, white or blue. Calyx 5-merous. Corolla funnel- or salver-shaped, frequently with 5 scales in the throat. Stamens 5; nutlets (1–3)–4, generally smooth, white, lustrous but sometimes textured. Thomas, Wiegend & Hilger 2008; Munz & Keck 1959
A genus of approx. 80 species present on all continents except Australia and Antarctica, but with a centre of diversity in Mexico and the southwestern United States (Cohen 2022).
