A genus of a few species of herbs and sub-shrubs, natives of New Zealand and temperate South America, It is very closely allied to Calceolaria, but differs in its corolla, which is divided into almost equal, erect ‘lips’, with flat or only slightly inrolled margins, and thus not showing the ‘pouch’ characteristic of the true calceolarias.

The genus was named by Ruiz and Pavon in honour of C. M. de Jovellanes, a student of the flora of Peru.
