'Gordonia' from the website Trees and Shrubs Online (treesandshrubsonline.
A genus of some forty species of trees and shrubs, all save one (the American G. lasianthus) natives of E. Asia, allied to Camellia and Stuartia. The name commemorates James Gordon (d. 1781), who had a celebrated nursery at Mile End, London, and is best known as the introducer of the maidenhair tree, Ginkgo biloba.
On page 294 the basionym of Gordonia lasianthus is wrongly printed as Hypericum lasianthum L. In fact, Linnaeus used the noun-epithet lasianthus, which Ellis correctly retained unchanged when transferring the species to Gordonia. Had Linnaeus written lasianthum, this would have taken the feminine termination when transferred to Gordonia.
