Evidence is growing that Docynia should be included in Malus, but for now we retain it as a separate entry (JMG August 2024).

A genus of some five species of evergreen or partially evergreen trees or shrubs with alternate leaves. The generic name is an anagram of ‘Cydonia’ and the genus is indeed closely allied to the true quince, which differs from it by its free styles.
