Editorial Note

At the time of Bean’s last edition the genus Podocarpus was used as a broad concept. Recent decades have seen much reorganisation of the Podocarpaceae, resulting in several segregate genera being described (or resurrected) from the implausibly broad interpretation of Podocarpus that existed in Bean’s time. One such genus is Dacrycarpus, which in its modern sense contains nine species distributed from southern China to New Zealand (though absent from Australia). This includes the species treated here as Dacrycarpus dacrydioides (syn. Podocarpus dacrydioides) and here we repeat Bean’s text for this species verbatim under the correct name, with appropriate synonymy. We have created these hybrid articles – Bean’s text under the correct modern names – for the whole of the Podocarpaceae to enable a new revision of Podocarpus (in the modern sense) to commence in early 2022.
