A genus of one variable and wide-ranging species (or a group of up to ten species in other interpretations), native of the New World from Virginia to northern S. America. The small family to which it belongs is allied to Aquifoliaceae and is also represented in gardens by Cliftonia monophylla (q.v.). The name commemorates Dominico Cirillo, an Italian physician (1739–99), at one time Professor of Botany at Naples.
