Tall deciduous shrub; stems upright, branchlets greenish at first, turning purple later, with small lenticels. Leaves 6–12 × 4–7 cm, chartaceous, ovate to broadly ovate, base rounded, upper surface dark green, with scattered trichomes, lower surface glaucous green, also with scattered trichomes, margins entire. Inflorescences corymbose, pubescent; bracts minute, not petal-like. Fruits subglobose to ovoid, 0.6–0.8 cm diameter, blue to white at maturity, with one stone; stone 0.5 cm long, slightly compressed, apex shortly pointed, sometimes faintly ribbed. Flowering in June, fruiting from July. (Rehder 1922).

Intermediate between the parent species, closer to Cornus sericea in habit, but more upright; first noticed in Seneca Park, Rochester, New York, near the gorge of the Genesee River (Rehder 1910; Bean 1976). The similarity in name has led to confusion with C. racemosa ‘Slavin’s Dwarf’ (a different plant), and incorrect identification of the hybrid parentage (see e.g. Gayraud 2013).
