Deciduous tree to 10 m. Bark smooth when young, exfoliating with age. Branchlets becoming lenticillate. Leaves 9–17 × 4.2–9.1 cm, chartaceous, elliptic to ovate, base attenuate, cuneate-crenate to oblique, upper surface green, lower surface paler, both surfaces pubescent with white trichomes, tufts of brown trichomes along midrib in vein axils on lower surface, five secondary veins on each side of the midvein, margins entire, sometimes slightly revolute, apex apiculate to acuminate. Inflorescence capitate, globose, 30–50-flowered, peduncles 3.5–7.5 cm long; bracts four, petal-like, white or pink, lanceolate to ovate, 4–6.5 × 3–6 cm, apex acuminate to cuspidate. Flowers 4-merous. Fruits single drupes, rarely fused into compound fruit. Flowering May to June, fruiting September to October. (Mattera, Molnar & Struwe 2015).

Cornus × rutgersensis is the name given to hybrids between the American Cornus florida and the East Asian C. kousa, representing crosses between two different subgenera, the drupe-bearing subgenus Cynoxylon and the ‘strawberry-fruited’ Syncarpea (Mattera, Molnar & Struwe 2015). This cross was first achieved as part of the extensive breeding programme initiated by Elwin Orton (1930–2025) at Rutgers State University, New Jersey. Orton had originally set out in 1965 to evaluate the performance of commercially available large-bracted dogwood cultivars, mainly varieties of the popular Cornus florida found to be very susceptible to the ravages of Dogwood Borer (Synathedon scitula) and intolerant of summer drought and poorly drained soils. During the course of the trial, it became evident that cultivars of Cornus kousa – at that time much less familiar in the United States – were far better able to tolerate these environmental stresses, as well as showing broad resistance to the borer and to powdery mildew (Molnar & Capik 2013).

Based on this realisation, Orton set out to breed a series of plants that would combine the general character of Cornus florida with the robustness of C. kousa. The disparity in the two species’ flowering time called for some ingenuity, involving the collection and cold-storage of pollen from C. florida, and the artificial manipulation of C. kousa into earlier flowering under glasshouse conditions (Mattera, Molnar & Struwe 2015). Of the resulting seedlings, six were found to be particularly promising plants, varying slightly in growth habit and size, shape and colour of the bracts. As well as improved environmental tolerance and pest resistance, they also exhibited resistance to the Dogwood Anthracnose (Discula destructiva) that had arrived in the United States (from where is still unclear) during the course of the breeding programme (Molnar & Capik 2013; Dirr 2011).

As sterile plants, the Rutgers hybrids flowered reliably every year, most having also inherited the precocious flowering of C. florida to produce a spectacular display of bracts in advance of the emerging foliage. The hybrid vigour has proved exceptional – Cappiello and Shadow (2005) cite a trial of dogwood cultivars in which the tall hybrids could be picked out immediately from five hundred container grown plants – though the young plants’ appetite for vegetative growth does seem to come at the cost of flower display in their first years (Dirr & Warren 2019, pers. obs.). The trees’ ultimate height, after several decades of observation, appears to be around 6 m. Like Cornus florida, they perform best in a warm, sunny site where the wood can fully ripen to maximise the following year’s floral display. In such locations, they will also develop excellent autumn colour (Junker 2022).

The best of Orton’s selections were patented and introduced during the 1990s by Rutgers State University, marketed as the Stellar® Series. In the horticultural literature variations of the the hybrid combination Cornus × rutgersensis for Orton’s plants have been in use for many years, the hybrid name eventually validated in 2015 by a published botanical description to cover all crosses between the two species (Mattera, Molnar & Struwe 2015).

Of the six original cultivars, Dirr & Warren (2019) pick out ‘Rutban’ Aurora®, ‘Rutdan’ Celestial® and ‘Rutgan’ Stellar Pink® as the best of the group. To that shortlist could be added ‘Rutlan’ Ruth Ellen®, which makes a very acceptable alternative to Cornus florida, on the basis of observations in southeast England during 2020–2024.

Propagation by softwood cuttings treated with rooting hormone in early summer can be successful, and will be necessary in the case of cultivars that exhibit graft incompatility problems, e.g. Stardust® (Cappiello & Shadow 2005). Grafting is still the more common practice, although opinions differ on the most compatible rootstock. Brian Humphrey has grafted several Cornus × rutgersensis cultivars onto seedling C. kousa rootstocks without any problems, though he suggests that trials comparing results between C. florida and C. kousa rootstocks for this group would be worthwhile (Humphrey 2019).

One of Orton’s original hybrid selections, but named and released much later than the other six cultivars (patent filed in 2005); comparable with ‘Rutdan’ Celestial®, but wider than tall, forming vigorous trees with a dense, rounded habit. The white bracts are broad, ovate and overlapping, and the foliage is shining deep-green. (US 2007/0028335 P1; Cappiello & Shadow 2005).

Released in 2011, this is another selection from Rutgers University, developed by back-crossing one of the original F1 hybrids with Cornus kousa. Unlike the others, this cultivar is known to produce fertile fruit (Mattera, Molnar & Struwe 2015). The white, obcordate bracts are large and overlapping, and the deep green foliage gives a mixture of yellow, purple and orange shades in autumn (Hatch 2020).

A variegated branch sport found on ‘Rutgan’ Stellar Pink, with which it is identical in all other respects. A fast-growing triploid with extremely large glossy leaves (to 20 × 15.5 cm) and large obovate, acuminate bracts, the involucres measuring approx. 14 cm across. Autumn colour is in the yellow-orange-red spectrum (rather than red purple) (US PP36596 P2). Developed by Tom Ranney, North Carolina State University, Cloudburst™ is upright and rounded in habit, and exhibits resistance to mildew and anthracnose. The seed parent was an F1 cross from Cornus kousa ‘Greensleeves’ × C. florida ‘World’s Fair’, and the male parent presumed to be C. florida – this rough 2:1 amalgam of C. florida and C. kousa would account for the typical C. florida appearance, though the disease resistance is inherited from the C. kousa parent. (Ranney 2025).

A vase-shaped small tree with overlapping broad, rounded white bracts giving a full-bodied appearance to the inflorescences. Bracts obovate with acute tips, often twisted, not overlapping, giving an attractive starry effect. A strong, upright small tree with a rounded crown. The broad bracts are slightly overlapping and pink-flushed, the intensity depending greatly on conditions – the colour can be a good soft pink, but fades quickly to white in hot sun. At the Junker Nursery, Somerset, UK, it flowers heavily every year. The pollen parent was ‘Sweetwater Red’. (US PP07207 P; Cappiello & Shadow 2005; Dirr & Warren 2019; Junker 2022).

The slightly overlapping white bracts, ageing to pink, are narrower and more informally arranged than in the rest of the Stellar® series – ‘like handkerchiefs hung out to dry’ (Junker 2022). This is always the first of the group to flower, resembling Cornus florida in general effect, the display often just getting under way as the bracts in that species begins to fade. This is a slower growing cultivar, making a low-branched, often multi-stemmed, more spreading tree, said to be more susceptible to powdery mildew. Named after the paediatrician Ruth Ellen Steinman Bloustein, wife of a former president of Rutgers. The pollen parent was C. florida ‘Hillenmeyer’. (US PP07732 P; Cappiello & Shadow 2005; Dirr & Warren 2019; Junker 2022).
