Deciduous shrub to 4 m. Bark somewhat warty, yellow to red. Stems arching to the ground and rooting at nodes. Branchlets green, red, or dark red to brown, rarely green in winter and reddish in summer, appressed pubescent at first, lenticels apparent on older growth; pith white. Leaves 3.5–20 × 1.5–12 cm, chartaceous, lanceolate to ovate, base cuneate, upper surface green, with sparse, appressed pubescence, lower surface whitish, pubescent with appressed trichomes, sometimes with tufts of erect trichomes in vein axils, five to seven secondary veins on each side of the midvein, margins entire, apex acute to acuminate; petiole to 4 cm long. Inflorescence cymose, 3–6 cm diameter, peduncle 20–40 mm, pedicels green or yellowish-green, turning dark red in fruit. Flowers hermaphrodite, whitish, sepals ~0.1 cm, petals 0.2–0.4 cm long. Fruit a drupe, subglobose to globose, white to bluish white, slightly compressed laterally, 0.6–1 cm diameter, with one stone; stone subglobose, laterally compressed, 0.4–0.6 × 0.15–0.3 cm. Cornus sericea is native to North America, from the Atlantic to the Pacific states (absent from the Deep South), closely allied to the ‘Eurosiberian’ species C. alba. The form most commonly grown – usually under the name C. stolonifera – is prized for the deep-red colour of the winter stems, but recent cultivars supply the yellow through green bands of the dogwood spectrum in especially vivid shades. Many selections also produce superlative autumnal displays of foliage.
Though the name was published by Linnaeus in 1771, the modern concept of Cornus sericea is very recent, not established until the middle of the twentieth century. For most of its history the name was applied to a different plant (see C. amomum). As currently understood, the species encompasses taxa described at various times under the names C. stolonifera (from New England), C. baileyi (the Great Lakes), C. interior (Nebraska) and C. instolonea (Colorado). In some treatments, Cornus californica (from the Pacific coast) has also been included within the species. These constituent taxa were distinguished by geographical distribution and type of leaf pubescence, as well as characters relating to the shape of the stone. Concluding that these taxa constituted ‘merely an aggregation of forms’, Fosberg (1942) united them into a single species, but recognised the Pacific population as a subspecies on the basis of the larger flowers and longitudinally ridged stone. Rickett (1944) went further, recognising C. occidentalis (= C. californica) at specific rank, a determination that has been broadly accepted – see the entry for that species.
Linnaeus’s original description of Cornus sericea has caused problems of identification ever since its publication (Linnaeus 1771) – he himself was hazy about its identity as he all but admitted in his description (where he gives it blackish-blue fruits), and surviving specimens in his herbarium with this label are referrable to C. stolonifera, C. amomum and even C. sanguinea (Rickett 1944). For almost two hundred years, the name was applied to the Blue-Fruited Dogwood, C. amomum, so the fact that Bean never used the name, even as a synonym, is less surprising than might at first appear (he treated the species separately as C. baileyi and C. stolonifera). The identity of Cornus sericea was only stabilised by main force, through Fosberg’s lectotypification (LINN.151.6), though as a consequence, portions of Linnaeus’s description (notably the fruit colour) are inapplicable.
Cornus sericea has at times been included within C. alba, the two species together constituting an almost complete circumboreal population. Treated separately, as in the present account, the two are distinguished by leaf shape (tapering-acuminate in C. sericea, abruptly acuminate to acute in C. alba) and fruits (creamy-coloured with a subglobose stone in C. sericea, white to light-blue with an ellipsoid stone in C. alba), though identification is complicated by the fact that both taxa are highly variable, and that certain character states, notably relating stone shape, have been found to overlap (Zieliński et al. 2014); the structure of the cuticular wax crystals on the lower leaf surface has also been found of some diagnostic utility, though such microcharacters are obviously of limited horticultural relevance.
Shifting concepts of the species also make it difficult to ascertain the date of introduction with any precision. Fosberg’s lectotype was gathered from a cultivated plant growing (or once grown) in Uppsala in 1771. From the same period, the ‘Cornouiller de Canada à bois rouge & fruit blanc’ described (as C. alba) in Vilmorin-Andrieux’s catalogue of 1783 (Vilmorin-Andrieux 1783) plausibly refers to an early colonial introduction from French Louisiana (but see the entry for C. alba for another possibility). Selections were being offered by the turn of the twentieth century, notably ‘Flaviramea’ (Späth 1899), again under the name C. alba.
It has been stated authoritatively (e.g. in Flora of North America) that the species’ best-known synonym, C. stolonifera, is a misnomer, and that the species does not produce true differentiated stolons, merely branch tips that ‘arch infrequently to the ground’ and root. However this is incorrect, overlooking the fact that the species is capable of expressing two different growth forms, depending on its environment. While plants will form more-or-less erect shrubs in open conditions, under a closed canopy they are indeed capable of adopting a clasically stoloniferous habit, producing long outward-growing shoots that creep across the soil, resulting in a low mass of stems approx. 1 m in height (Charles-Dominique, Edelin & Bouchard 2010).
In Ireland the species has proved an ‘aggressive invader’ capable of creating extensive dense thickets in wet woodland that suppress and impoverish the naturally species-rich herbaceous layer. The result has been compared to the chaos wrought by Rhododendron ponticum, though the dogwood stands are created by layering rather than by seed – such limited dispersal as has been observed appears to be by way of vegetative fragments carried by rivers in spate (Kelly 1990).
The dried inner bark was smoked the by the native Americans of the Great Lakes and central United States. Among the Ojibwe and Menominee, C. sericea (gēga’daganagēgok) was the most prized of several dogwood species used for this purpose– its preparation and ritual use was described by S. A. Barrett (1911); see also C. amomum.

This form of the species – or at least, the name Cornus baileyi – is well-established in the nursery trade, particularly in the Midwestern states of North America (Cappiello & Shadow 2005; Dirr 2009), having in the past been treated as a species in its own right, based on populations growing in sandy areas around the Great Lakes (Michigan, Ontario, Minnesota and Indiana) (Fosberg 1942). The epithet commemorates Liberty Hyde Bailey – eminent botanist, and coiner of the word ‘cultivar’ – who had grown up in South Haven, Michigan, and had observed plants growing on dunes there that he thought distinct from type C. stolonifera – i.e. more erect in habit, with leaves that are woolly white beneath, curling slightly at the margins to give the plant a ‘distinct grayish hue’ (Bailey 1900). This form of the plant was recognised as a pioneer species on new sand dunes, colonising the elevated dune, while type C. stolonifera (red osier) inhabited the damper hollows (Hill 1896).
Bailey, who became Professor of Horticulture at Cornell (appropriately enough), regarded the colour of the autumn foliage and winter twigs on the Michigan plants as ‘unequalled’ (Bailey 1900, 1906). As Cornus baileyi, the form was introduced commercially in the early twentieth century (not before 1900), being reasonably widely available by the beginning of the 1920s (Bailey 1900). Having done the taxonomic rounds, the epithet baileyi has now been reduced to synonymy within the species, but on ecological and cultural grounds (as an ecotype especially well adapted to sandy soil) the concept does seem to retain some residual taxonomic value, albeit for horticultural purposes it is now most appropriately treated as a Cultivar Group. Besides the affinity for sand, and the geographical provenance, the villous abaxial surface to the leaf and the fine colour are distinguishing characters.
As the dogwood spectrum has expanded significantly in recent decades, modern authors have become less fulsome about the end-of-year display than might have been the case a century ago: Cappiello and Shadow (2005) are unenthusiastic about the ‘dull brownish-red’ stems, though Hillier (2014) notes the brilliant autumn colour.

A selection with yellow-orange stems, which become intensely red in areas with cold winters (Cappiello & Shadow 2005). Introduced by Harold Pellett of Minnesota Landscape Arboreum, USA in 1980 (Hatch 2018–2020). The reddish pigmentation tends to intensify towards the tips of the stems, the bottom third (or even half) of each stem remaining yellow-green. The winter display varies in quality, giving rise to conflicting opinions: Ballyrobert Gardens (2026) value the cultivar highly for its performance in low winter sun, but a planting at the Yorkshire Arboretum has produced colours that are muted, even drab; cultural or environmental factors may account for the difference.

Young stems entirely green, fruits white; described by Koehne from a cultivated plant in Germany, which also differed from the typical state in its larger, more glossy leaves (Koehne 1903). The form was once widely grown on both sides of the Atlantic (it is not known if this was a single clone), but more recently the interest in red- and yellow-stemmed selections seems to have elbowed out the green-stemmed form – a pity, since it fills a useful, rather unusual gap in the spectrum. In Germany, the plant was originally distributed by Dieck under the name C. glabrata (misapplied).
