Cornus mas Cultivars H-M

'Happy Face'

Marbled, oval, yellow- or cream-spotted leaves (Gayraud 2013), though the effect varies and might equally be described as pale yellowish-green leaves flecked with mid green.

'Hecoma'

Small but prolific fruits, ripens late August/early September; selected by Helmut Pirc, Schönbrunn (Pirc 2015).

'Hillier's Upright'

A fastigiate form with pyramidal habit, raised at Hillier Nurseries, Winchester by Alf Alford, before 1974 (Edwards & Marshall 2019, Gayraud 2013).

'JFS PN4Legacy'

A vigorous selection with a columnar habit, dark green foliage and exfoliating bark; good crimson autumn foliage (J. Frank Schmidt 2023).

'Jolico'

One of the best fruiting cultivars, with large, sweet fruit, late to mature. Selected by the Austrian grower Johan Lishka (hence, the name ‘JoLiCo’). Widely planted in Austria in the Dirndl Valley – a centre of C. mas cultivation (Gayraud 2013).

'Juliusz'

A rather weak selection with red, spherical fruits, ripening late August–mid September; introduced by Bolestraszyce Arboretum, Poland (Pirc 2015).

'Kazanlak'

Red olive-sized fruits (Gayraud 2013). Selected by Tsolo Nagov, Bulgaria, introduced by A. Koljaschev; ripens late August–early September (Pirc 2015).

'Koralovyi'

Vigorous, with orange-red fruits that ripen mid August to mid September (Pirc 2015).

'Koralovyi-Marka'

Red-orange, oval, well flavoured fruits with a high sugar content. From a cross between yellow-fruited ‘Yantarni’ (seed parent) and an unidentified red-fruited variety. Marketed as ‘Sunrise’ in the United States (but Cornus mas Sunrise^TM is a different plant – see ‘Marina’) (Pirc 2015).

'Kostya'

A moderately vigorous hybrid with large cylindrical fruits. Ripens mid September to mid October (Pirc 2015).

Lanceolata Group

Narrow, white-variegated foliage, known as a garden form in France and Germany since at least 1862 (Groenland 1862). Variegated material grown under this name that lacks the lanceolate leaf-shape is referred by Schneider (1912) to f. argenteo-marginata Schelle.

'Lukyanivsky'

Moderately vigorous with dark red pear-shaped fruit, maturing in mid August; of Ukrainian origin – said to be one of the best of the Ukrainian cultivars (Pirc 2015).

Macrocarpa Group

Plants listed as ‘Macrocarpa’ appear in German nursery catalogues from the 1890s (e.g. Heinemann 1890), evidently a garden variety, which Dippel (1893) treated as a form. In view of the vague distinguishing character (‘large fruit’), it seems improbable that plants circulating under this name represent a single clone.

'Marina'

Bred by Svitlana Klymenko, Ukraine, this cultivar has distinctive rounded fruits streaked with orange, well flavoured, and edible raw; ripens in early September (Pirc 2015). Offered in the United States by Cricket Hill Nursery; elsewhere under the trade name Cornus mas Sunrise^TM (not the same plant as C. mas ‘Sunrise’).

'Matador'

An early-maturing form selected by Pépinières Minier, Angers. Fruits ripen in August. Gayraud 2013
