This S. American genus, well known by its cultivated greenhouse races, commemorates F. Calceolari, an Italian botanist who lived in the sixteenth century. The plant described in previous editions under the name C. violacea is now placed in the small related genus Jovellana, distinguished by a corolla divided into almost equal erect ‘lips’, with flat or only slightly inrolled margins, and thus not showing the ‘pouch’ characteristic of the true calceolarias.
