Sideroxylon lanuginosum (previously known as Bumelia lanuginosa, mentioned on this page) forming a thorny thicket as a wild plant, which does not encourage its cultivation (Gillespie Co., Texas, USA – 3 March 2024). Image Julian Sutton.

A genus of about twenty-five species of evergreen or deciduous shrubs and trees ranging from Virginia and Illinois into S. America. The species described are of interest as the only members of the Sapodilla family grown outside in the British Isles.
