A multi-stemmed small tree, to 6 m with greyish white bark. Shoot brown with colourless glands, densely hairy; Twig to 2.5 mm diam., hairs as shoot; white glands quite dense, bun-shaped, and smaller flat reddish-brown glands; lenticels small, oval, white. Bud to 3 × 1.75 mm, small, narrower than twig, grey-brown, scale margins ciliate, otherwise glabrous. Petiole c. 10 mm with only a few long hairs. Leaves triangular to rhombic-ovate, truncate to cuneate at base, with 4–6 pairs of veins, singly or doubly serrate, ± glabrous with a few long hairs on the main veins on both leaf surfaces and leaf axils on underside [though described as densely pubescent by Li & Skvortsov (1999)]. Fruiting catkin erect, 1–2.5 × 7–8 mm; peduncle 5–10 mm; bracts 5–6 mm, lateral lobes erect or slightly spreading. Nutlet c. 2.5 × 1.5 mm with wing about half as wide as nutlet. Tetraploid: 2n=56 (McAllister unpubl.)

Habitat Broad leaved forests and by streams in desert-steppe valleys.

Described from the Altai mountains, Betula microphylla is one of numerous isolated birch populations in the mountains of central Asia that have been described as separate species (see the entry for Betula tianschanica). In the wild it forms a small tree, often with several stems. Its small, few-veined leaves and very white-warty twigs greatly resemble those of B. humilis, which may have contributed one of the genomes to this tetraploid species, though a possible hybrid origin might perhaps involve B. fruticosa and/or B. pubescens, each of which this species resembles in certain characters. Moving from the Altai through the Tian Shan there seems to be no clear distinction between B. microphylla and B. tianschanica. Betula halophila was described from saline areas in Balibagi of the lower reaches of the Kelang River, Altay County, Xinjiang, China.

The species is very rare in cultivation. As it originates in an extreme continental climate, it has not grown well in the British Isles, forming only a straggly small tree with several stems and suffering severe winter dieback of twigs, especially in the lower part of the canopy. Only the most vigorous shoots exposed to the strongest sunlight mature sufficiently to survive most winters.
