This genus was treated as Eupatorium by Bean (1981).

The formerly very large genus Eupatorium has been split into several genera, of which Ageratina is one. It contains some 200 species from the southern United States through central America and south through western South America. Only Ageratina ligustrina is in temperate cultivation; some other species are noxious weeds outside their natural range (Mabberley 2017, Edwards & Marshall 2019).
