This taxon is sometimes attributed to Acer capillipes, though is more likely a hybrid between that species and another species. A small tree. Bark strongly straited. Leaves larger than typical A. capillipes, 10–12 cm long, 3 and also 5-lobed (van Gelderen & van Gelderen 1999). Distributed in cultivation only.

USDA Hardiness Zone 6-7

RHS Hardiness Rating H6

‘Gimborn’ was raised and introduced by the Von Gimborn Arboretum, the Netherlands, for which it was named in 1996, having arisen there as a seedling. (van Gelderen and van Gelderen 1999; Hatch 2018–2020). Its true parentage requires further investigation.
