A tree to 15 m in the wild. Bark grey to brown. Branchlets green, lenticillate, pubescent or glabrescent, soon turning dark brown. Buds small, brown, ovoid, with four to eight pairs of scales, pubescent along their margins. Leaves evergreen, ovate to oblong, base cuneate to rounded or truncate, unlobed (–three-lobed in var. formosanum), usually with three primary veins, 2.5–13 × 1–6 cm, apically acuminate to caudate, margins entire to slightly undulate, upper surface glossy green, lower surface glaucous to whitish, glabrous or pubescent, sometimes only at first; petiole 1–3.5 cm long, green, glabrous. Plants usually andromonoecious, Inflorescence corymbose on terminal shoots, pubescent, flowers yellowish-green, 5-merous, pedicels ~1.5 cm, sepals orbicular-ovate, petals oblong-ovate, stamens eight, inserted on the outside of the nectar disc, ovary pubescent. Samaras 1.5–2.5 cm long, wings spreading variously. Nutlets ovoid. Flowering in April, fruiting in September (Taiwan). (Xu et al. 2008).

Habitat Moist forests and valleys, between 400 and 2000 m asl. Associated species include Alnus formosana, Idesia polycarpa and Quercus spp.

Taxonomic note Treated as a synonym of Acer oblongum by van Gelderen, de Jong & Oterdoom (1994), though Xu et al. (2008) consider it distinct and their treatment is followed here.
Endemic to Taiwan, Acer albopurpurascens is the Asian island’s equivalent to A. oblongum, widespread in mainland east Asia, which it has previously been considered a part of. Differences between the two appear to be subtle, though according to Xu et al. (2008), A. albopurpurascens is a smaller tree (15 m vs. 20 m in A. oblongum) with shorter petioles and smaller leaves, their apices acuminate to caudate, rather than acuminate as in A. oblongum.
Infrequent in collections, plants have found their way into western gardens via a range of sources. Material was introduced via the late James Harris in 1978 (Clarke 1988; Harris 2000), founder of Mallet Court Nursery, Somerset, UK, while various introductions have been made more recently by Bleddyn Wynn-Jones and colleagues. The earliest of these was in 2007 from Dasyueshan while collecting with Finlay Colley, under CWJ 12361 from a 10 m tall tree growing at 1850 m asl. Two further introductions made by Bleddyn and Sue Wynn-Jones in collaboration with colleagues from the Taiwan National Museum of Natural Science were made in 2014 under numbers NMWJ 14455 and 14486 (Crûg Farm 2023 onwards). Their advice that the species is “best grown in a sheltered position in a sunny spot out of freezing winds in a relatively well drained soil that does not dry out when establishing” might also be applied to the species’ closest relatives in Sect. Pentaphylla Ser. Trifida. The UK and Irish Champion A. albopurpurascens is a tree of 10 m at Tregrehan, Cornwall, planted in 1989 and measured in 2024 (The Tree Register 2025). The plant at Tregrehan was raised from seed distributed by the Taiwan Forestry Research Initiative, for many years a useful source of Taiwanese material via its Index Seminum, though often not from such high altitude provenances as many western growers would like. The species appears little-tried elsewhere, though is worthy of experimentation, particularly wild origin material gathered from higher elevations.

Taxonomic note Treated as a variety of Acer buergerianum by van Gelderen, de Jong & Oterdoom (1994) and Xu et al. (2008), molecular evidence has indicated that the species is better treated as part of A. albopurpurascens (Tzeng & Huang 2009). The two are also reported to hybridise (Tzeng & Huang 2009).
Rare in the wild and reportedly threatened with extinction (Lu & Pan 1998), Acer albopurpurascens var. formosanum has been introduced to western gardens in the relatively recent past, having been noted as absent from cultivation by van Gelderen, de Jong & Oterdoom (1994). It grows at Rogów Arboretum, Poland, from a plant acquired from Fushan and planted in 2009, which while fully hardy, still exhibits juvenile foliage (P. Banaszczak, pers. comm. 2026). In the UK, Cambridge University Botanic Garden report a wild-derived plant accessioned in 2009 (Cambridge Botanic Garden 2021). Crûg Farm list plants (as A. buergerianum var. formosanum) collected by Finlay Colley and Bleddyn Wynn-Jones in 2014 under CWJ 12477, noting that ‘plants have survived well for us in an open field without protection. Best grown in a moisture retentive but well draining soil in sun to part shade, protected from freezing winds’ (Crûg Farm 2023 onwards). An individual of this origin is the current UK and Irish Champion, growing at Alexandra Park, Hastings, measured at 2 m tall in 2023 having been planted in 2016 and ‘growing OK in woodland shelter after a slow, bushy start’ (The Tree Register 2025).
