Editorial Note

Bean treated species in Acanthoprasium under the genus Ballota. We supply new text below, since the removal from Ballota of the woody species renders Bean’s discussion largely tangential.

Small shrubs, with flowers in cymes of 1–3 flowers, with paired, spiny bracteoles. Calyx bell-shaped with 5–10 spiny lobes. Corolla two-lipped, lower lip with three lobes. Style with slightly unequal lobes. Fruit a nutlet. Bendiksby et al. 2011

A genus of three species from France, Italy and Cyprus (POWO 2025/4/1), consisting of the few woody species formerly included in Ballota. These were found to constitute a distinct sister clade with respect to the rest of the (herbaceous) species in Ballota (Bendiksby et al. 2011), and the former genus Acanthoprasium was resurrected to house them.
