The generic name Tapiscia is an anagram of Pistacia, to which this species, the only one of its genus, bears some resemblance. Its taxonomic position is uncertain, and it should perhaps rank, with one other genus, as a distinct family, near to the Staphyleaceae, in which it is usually placed.
