A genus of about 100 species of glabrous herbs or small shrubs, distributed throughout most of the world on saline soils. Leaves small, fleshy, alternate. Flowers axillary, solitary or in cymes, inconspicuous. Perianth segments five, somewhat fleshy. Stamens five. Ovary with three to five stigmas, developing into an achene.
