A genus of seven species of subshrubs ranging from Central Asia to N.E. Persia, Afghanistan, the N.W. Himalaya, and Baluchistan. Leaves opposite, toothed or pinnately divided. Inflorescence paniculate, with numerous spike-like branches, on which the flowers are arranged in whorls. Corolla two-lipped, the upper lip four-lobed, lower lip entire. Fertile stamens two, with contiguous anther-cells. Nutlets four, oblong-ovoid.

The name (sometimes spelt “Perowskia”) commemorates V. A. Perovski, Governor of the Russian province of Orenburg at the time when Karelin founded the genus (1841).
