A small genus of shrubs and sub-shrubs, ranging from S. Europe to C. Asia. Only the species described here is native to Europe. Of allied genera treated in this work, Perowskia is distinguished by its toothed leaves and flowers with only two fertile stamens and Thymus by always having much smaller leaves. In Satureia the stamens are included under the upper lip of the corolla, not exserted and conspicuous as in Hyssopus.
