A genus of about thirty species in E. Asia and Central and S. America of which only the species described below can be grown out-of-doors in Britain.

From the Supplement (Vol.V)

The name D. trifidus (Thunb.) Makino should be used for this species, since there can be little doubt that it is the plant named Acer trifidum by Thunberg. The gender of the generic name, as of all compounds ending in -panax, is masculine under present-day rules, regardless of the fact that Linnaeus treated Panax as neuter.
