A genus of two species, one of Atlantic Europe from Ireland to Portugal, the other of the Azores. Although classed with the heaths (Erica and Calluna) in gardens, it is more closely allied to such genera as Phyllodoce. Among ericaceous genera of heath-like habit it is distinguished by the elongated, racemose inflorescence; deciduous, urn-shaped corollas, and by the septicidal capsules.
